Usage

This template may be used to cite articles in serial publications such as journals, magazines and newspapers.

Template

You may copy the sample template below for use in other pages. It contains all available parameters. Unused parameters can be omitted.

Parameters

All parameters are optional unless otherwise indicated.

Parameter Description
Names of author(s)
last The last and first names of the primary author of the article. Alternatively, specify the primary author's name using |{{#if:author|author=|}}.
first
author first=|}} and |{{#if:last|last=|}}.
authorlink The name of a Wikipedia article about the author, like this: ":en:Mark Twain" (for the article "{{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|Mark Twain}}" in the English Wikipedia) or ":de:Friedrich Schiller" (for the article "Friedrich Schiller" in the German Wikipedia).
coauthors The name(s) of the co-author(s) of the article. Names can be {{safesubst:#if: wikilinked |wikilinked|Help:Link#Wikilinks}}, if desired. Separate a series of names with semicolons, like this: "[[:en:Harry Woolf, Baron Woolf|Lord Woolf]]; Jeffrey Jowell; Andrew Le Sueur; Catherine M. Donnelly". (You may also link to an article at the English Wikipedia like this: "[[w:Mark Twain|Mark Twain]]" or "{{w|Mark Twain}}".)
Title
title Mandatory: The title of the article.
url The {{safesubst:#if: URL |URL|Universal Resource Locator}} (Internet address) of a web page where a copy of the article can be found.
archiveurl archivedate=|}} must be used as well.
archivedate archiveurl=|}}.
format The format of the document at the web page, such as "DOC" for a {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|Microsoft Word}} document or "PDF" for a document in the {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|Portable Document Format}}.
accessdate The date when the web page on which the article appears was accessed.
Imprint
journal Mandatory: the name of the journal or other serial publication in which the article appears. The name may be wikilinked, like this: "{{w|American Journal of Comparative Law}}" (for the English Wikipedia), "[[:fr:Le Monde|Le Monde]]".
location The place of publication of the journal.
publisher The name of the publisher of the journal. The name may be wikilinked.
date month=|}} and |{{#if:year|year=|}}.
dateformat dateformat=|}} is not specified, readers who are logged in will see the date formatted according to their "Date format" preferences. Alternatively, one of the following date formats can be specified: "dmy", "mdy", "ymd" or "{{safesubst:#if: ISO 8601 |ISO 8601|ISO 8601#Calendar dates}}".
month Use |{{#if:month|month=|}} and |{{#if:year|year=|}} to state the month and the year that the article appeared in the journal, or |{{#if:year|year=|}} alone to specify the year of publication. Alternatively, provide a full date using |{{#if:date|date=|}}.
year
volume The volume number of the journal that the article appeared in.
issue The issue number of the journal that the article appeared in.
page Use |{{#if:page|page=|}} to specify the first page number of the article, or |{{#if:pages|pages=|}} to specify the first and last page numbers of the article. Separate a span of pages with an {{safesubst:#if: en dash |en dash|dash#En dash}}, like this: "520–534".
pages
doi The {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|Digital Object Identifier}} of the article.
pmc The {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|PubMed Central}} number of the article.
pmid The {{safesubst:#if: PubMed identifier |PubMed identifier|PMID}} of the article.
issn The {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|International Standard Serial Number}} (ISSN) of the journal, for example, "0028-0836". Alternatively, |{{#if:id|id=|}} can be used to specify some other code or number identifying the journal.
id
Other parameters
quote A quotation from the article.
curly If "curly=on", the template uses curly quotation marks (“ ”) instead of straight quotation marks (" ").
postscript By default, a {{safesubst:#if: |{{{2}}}|full stop}} (period) is displayed at the end of the citation. To suppress the full stop, use "postscript=no". To specify a comma or some other punctuation mark, use "postscript=,". Colons and semicolons must be surrounded by <nowiki> tags, like this: "postscript=<nowiki>;</nowiki>".
