Readings

HTCondor

Note that there is really only one reading for this week. The others are short supplements to help understand the first. You should use online resources to get background on any terms or systems you are unfamiliar with.

Discussion Questions

  • What problem(s) was HTCondor designed to solve? Specifically, what was the need, and what resources were being allocated to address that need?
  • How did the presence of multiple resource owners influence HTCondor's design?
  • What is the basic architecture of HTCondor?
  • What interfaces are presented to users? To machine owners?
  • What were some major changes in technology and workload that influenced the evolution of HTCondor?
  • Why do you think HTCondor has become less important over time relative to other approaches to distributed computing? What has changed?
  • How robust is HTCondor against malicious users? Malicious machine owners? Other parties?
  • Would you call HTCondor a distributed operating system?
