COMP 3000 2011 Report: Sabayon Linux

  Background

This is an Operating System powered on the Linux kernel. It uses Gentoo Linux which is also another Linux distribution as its base. Generally, it’s based on Gentoo’s testing branch.[1] </ref> There is a binary based package manager known as Entropy and Sabayon uses this. Basically Entropy contains all the existing files and directories to install and the maintainer scripts necessary for the installation.2 It was developed by Fabio Erculiani. As they claim, they are using an OOTB(out of the box) functionalities which do not require any further or additional installation. It’s more of a genereal purpose ditribution. As it says in their homepage “We aim to deliver the best user experience "out of the box" by providing the latest open source technologies in an elegant format.” They suggest that everything should work out for the user may it be multimedia, browsing developing or even work.3 The name is derived from Zabaione (also written as sabayon) which is an Italian custard(dessert) made with egg yolks, sugar and sweet wine. 4 Sabayon is available for free on the internet and you can simply download it form sabayon.org. It’s approximately about 683MB big (We’re actually using a desktop environment an experimental trial like version called Sabayon Enlightenment). There are two main editions namely Sabayon KDE and Sabayon Gnome and some other experimental and gaming editions Like I stated before it’s a Gentoo based Linux distribution, which makes it source based and binary based distribution at the same time. It’s not really Gentoo as a lot of people say but more of a pre-configured Gentoo. It’s easier to install and provides pre-built binaries and initial setup. It also comes with pre-installed media codecs, drivers and games. I think it’s main purpose was to create a simpler and more user-friendly version of Gentoo because it was created by users form other Linux distributions. It’s different from most other distributions as it’s completely independent from commercial interests. 5
