Based on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian/ Debain] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29/ Ubuntu], the [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ Lubuntu] project runs on the i686 architecture.
Its main goal is to create an alternative of Ubuntu that is more compact, less resource hungry and more energy-efficient by using lightweight applications and LXDE, (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as its default GUI.
Lubuntu is targeted at "standard" PC and laptop users running on low-spec hardware. Such users may not know how to use command line tools, and in most cases they just don't have enough resources for all the bells and whistles of the "full-featured" mainstream distributions.
One month after its release Lubuntu 11.04, has risen to 9th place on the DistroWatch 30 day list of most popular distributions. Lubuntu received official recognition as a formal member of the Ubuntu family, commencing with Lubuntu 11.10 released on October 13th, 2011 which is also the release date for Ubuntu 11.10.
Having a compact .iso image of roughly 697 MB Lubuntu can run on a Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MB or RAM as a minimum, may yield slow yet usable with those minimum configurations. It is possible to install and run Lubuntu with less memory, but for practicality is not recommended.
Its homepage is http://lubuntu.net/ and download mirrors are located at http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/.
