Tutorial 2 Q12 Solution

(Question reworded to follow style of assignments.)

12. How would you implement redirection of standard out for plist() (the same as if it was an external command)?

  A: The basic idea is to take the filename recorded for changing
     standard out and pass it to plist so it can redirect its printf's
     there.

     First, delete lines 281-284, and instead insert the following at line 307:

                if (!strcmp(args[0], "plist")) {
                        plist(stdout_fn);
                        continue;
                }

     Then, change plist() as follows. First, change it so it takes a string
     argument:

       void plist(char *output_fn)

     Then, open the file at the beginning as a file stream

        FILE *out = stdout;

        if (output_fn) {
                out = fopen(output_fn, "w");
        }

     And then change the main printf's on line 177 and 179 to be fprintf's:

         fprintf(out, "%s: %s\n", e->d_name, comm);

     and

         fprintf(out, "%s\n", e->d_name);

Here's the full code for the modified version of 3000shell.c:
